Yes, I'm Standing

I have been nominated for President of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) of London. As many of you will know, the RCP has had a difficult 12 months. The controversy over the role of physician associates in medicine led to the resignation of the president in June 2024, followed by a pretty damning independent report criticising the college’s senior leadership, governance and culture. Even though I have been on RCP council since 2019, and a censor since 2022, like many members and fellows, I felt that that my voice was not being heard.  I became Academic Vice President in August 2024, and have helped steady the ship since then. However, I do think we need really strong leadership right at the top of the college, someone who knows how the RCP works, and what needs changing. This is why I am standing.

Whichever of the eight candidates is elected as the next president, they will need the strong endorsement of the fellows. Typically a third of the fellows vote. We need much more than that this year. So do please let all your friends and colleagues who are fellows now about the upcoming election.

What’s Next?

My 500 word election statement and 3 minute video will be posted in early March, along with those of the other candidates. There will also be a special edition of Commentary, the RCP magazine, featuring QnA with all candidates, and pre-recorded hustings will be released at some stage.

Voting?

Online voting will be Monday 17th March - Monday 15th April. RCP Fellows will receive an email from Civica including details of how to vote. (Please note the email can easily end up in spam, so you may need to search for it).

Monday 14th April: “College Day". Online voting closes at midday; in person votes can be posted at the Special General Meeting at RCP London. Results announced that day!
